A Letter from a Mother by Supriya Sinha

Dear Son,
I am old now, I’ve lived my years.
Through the journey of my life,
You were the most beautiful sight.

In the last days of my life,
Stay by my side;
Just as I stayed with you,
Through the first days of your life.
I love you my son.

When I’m sick and ailing,
Sit by my side;
Just as I sat beside you,
Through your wailing for hours together.
I love you my son.

When I stammer or fumble over words,
Don’t get irritated and listen patiently;
Just as I spent hours to understand,
your broken syllables, understand me too.
I love you my son.

When I’m unable to walk and tremble,
Hold my hands so that I may not stumble;
Just as you took your first steps,
Holding my hands.
I love you my son.

When I don’t feel like eating,
Don’t force me to eat,
feed me every bite gradually;
Just as I patiently sat beside you,
With a bowl of rice for hours together.
I love you my son.

Remember the way I’ve loved you,
Love me the same.
In the last days of my life,
Be the best son;
Just as I had been the best mother,
In the first days of your life.

–Your Mother
